It’s a Beauty Trip. Can We Still Order Dessert?

Dinner in Seoul does not need to pass a beauty test.

“Shall we just share one dessert?”

A familiar negotiation between friends on holiday. One sounded sensible, but now you have seen the menu and both look interesting. “We could share this one too.” A thoroughly reasonable conclusion is reached.

Does a beauty trip have to change this scene? Does booking a skin consultation mean you cannot also look forward to a delicious dinner? Asking every meal to make you more beautiful gives lunch a rather exhausting job description.

In Seoul, it might be nice to make a little more time for choosing something simply because it sounds good.

Familiar Korean food, unfamiliar favourite flavours

You probably have a dish in mind when somebody mentions Korean food. But filling the whole trip with names you already know leaves less room for discovery. Seoul’s official dining guide includes Korean restaurants alongside other cuisines, cafés and desserts. [1]

Picture a table with several small dishes. Some taste familiar immediately. Others surprise you, then draw your chopsticks back again. Your friend passes over your favourite side dish and reaches for one you barely noticed. Taste becomes quite visible at a dinner table.

Let one meal be slow and full of explanations; make the next a relaxed choice based on what sounds appealing. Every booking does not need to be an elaborate course. A table that makes conversation easy is already doing something useful.

Your step count can sit this one out

“We walked so much, we’ve earned it.” An understandable line, but dessert does not need to be exchanged for a particular amount of activity. Enjoying something because you feel like it does not make the trip less worthwhile.

And being satisfied is a perfectly good reason to stop. The famous dish may not be your favourite. Taking a bite and saying “Not quite for me” is still a valid discovery.

Discuss allergies, ingredients you need to avoid and religious dietary requirements when making arrangements. With a medical appointment on the itinerary, follow your clinician’s instructions about fasting or other food restrictions. Settling those practical details beforehand leaves the table free for other conversations.

An evening with nothing booked after dinner

Give yourself at least one evening without a reason to rush away. No approaching reservation cutting a story short. No next destination sending everybody back to their phones.

Ask your friend what surprised her most today. It might be a flavour or a new fragrance. “I didn’t expect you to buy that colour.” Suddenly the afternoon’s shopping begins again, this time across the dinner table.

Later, you may struggle to remember whether you ordered one dessert or two.

What stays clear is something else: “We laughed for such a long time that night.”
