How Korean Beauty Became a Reason to Travel

You can buy the products at home. So why does Seoul still feel worth the flight?

“Where’s that from?”

A look inside a friend’s make-up bag ends with the name of a Korean brand. A few days later, you spot another familiar name in someone else’s bathroom. You have never been to Seoul, but your dressing table seems to have made several trips already.

Not that anyone needs to board a plane for a bottle of serum. Korean beauty products are available in many countries now. What makes Seoul intriguing is the question sitting beside the product: what are people discovering where this was made?

A global story, discovered in small details

According to Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the country’s cosmetics exports reached approximately US$11.4 billion in 2025, placing it second worldwide. Korean beauty’s presence is more than a passing moment on social media. Of course, an export ranking does not guarantee the effectiveness of every product or the quality of every treatment. [1]

A traveller’s discoveries can be much smaller than those figures. A texture you love. A lid that opens with one hand. A bottle that actually fits in your bag. We ask quite a lot of our beauty products: hydrating but not sticky, beautiful but not impractical, hardworking without looking as though they have worked quite so hard.

Online, you checked those things through star ratings. In a shop, you can compare them for yourself. Read a description, explore a tester’s texture and enjoy the moment your friend completely disagrees. A shopping trip that began with “What’s popular?” becomes “Actually, I prefer this one.”

You came for the skincare. You stayed for the space.

Amore Seongsu in Seoul occupies a former car repair workshop. Parts of its rough walls and flooring remain, with a garden beyond the large windows. A place once devoted to looking after cars now invites people to explore beauty and taste. That change of purpose is interesting before you even pick anything up. [2]

When choosing an object becomes connected to a building, a song, a person or a neighbourhood, the memory changes too. Things that never appear in a product description become part of why you remember it: the music playing that afternoon, or the friend who looked at the same display and chose a completely different colour.

You may also discover that something you wanted online is not for you in person. That is a worthwhile result. You do not need every bestseller. A few choices you genuinely like will do.

Enjoying Korean beauty does not have to begin with wanting somebody else’s face. It can start with finding a colour that feels right, asking proper questions about care you are curious about, or enjoying the chance to choose away from a screen.

For a first visit, leave one small space on your shopping list. Keep it for something you do not know the name of yet.

Back home, you may hear the question from the other side: “Where did you find that?” This time, you will have a little more to say.
